AUTHORS: Shen G, Hagg U, Darendeliler MA. OBJECTIVE: Based on an extensive review of the literature, the aim of this study was to explore the mainstream consensus on the controversial topic of whether the bite jumping treatment could enhance mandibular growth. DESIGN: The data for removable and fixed functional appliances were respectively comprehended and analyzed with regard to their attributes in mandibular growth modification. Furthermore, numerous reported findings were assessed by relating them to some important factors influencing the effects of bite jumping, such as treatment timing, treatment duration and post-treatment follow-up, to allow for a more objective and accurate evaluation. RESULTS: The key differences between removable and fixed appliances are working hours (intermittent vs. continuous), length of treatment time (long vs. short), optimal treatment timing (before puberty growth vs. at or after puberty spurt), and mode of bite-jumping (considerable vertical opening vs. limited vertical opening). These different features lead to different treatment effects on mandibular and TMJ growth, such as the intensity of possibly increased growth (clinically less significant vs. significant), the direction of enhanced growth (vertical vs. horizontal), and the stability of treatment changes (unstable vs. stable). The short-term or long-term post-treatment relapse mainly relates to the rebound of dental position. CONCLUSION: The immediate effects of bite jumping functional appliances on the mandibular growth enhancement are convincing during actual treatment. This extra gain of growth might be sustainable during the short-term and long-term post-treatment period.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To assess antimicrobial activities of aqueous crude khat (Catha edulis) extracts against a panel of oral microorganisms and to test their ability to modify bacterial resistance to tetracycline and penicillin in vitro. DESIGN: Lyophilized aqueous extracts were prepared from three khat cultivars. The agar dilution method of the NCCLS was used to test the extracts, at concentrations of 20-1.25 mg/ml, against 33 oral strains. MIC was defined as the lowest concentration at which there was no visible growth. Slight growth was defined as marked growth reduction (MGR). The E-test was used to determine the MICs of tetracycline and penicillin-G for three resistant strains in absence and presence of a sub-MIC of the khat extracts (5mg/ml). RESULTS: Eighteen strains (55%) were sensitive to the extracts (MICs 5-20 mg/ml). Most of these were periodontal pathogens with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythensis being the most susceptible (MIC 5-10mg/ml). Veillonella parvula, Actinomyces israelii and some streptococci were not sensitive. Except for Lactobacillus acidophilus that showed MGR at 1mg/ml, cariogenic species were neither sensitive. The extracts were active against Streptococcus pyogenes (MIC 10-20 mg/ml) but not against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. The presence of the khat extracts at a sub-MIC resulted in a 2-4-fold potentiation of the tested antibiotics against the resistant strains. CONCLUSIONS: Khat has water-soluble constituents possessing selective antibacterial activity against oral bacteria. There is preliminary evidence for presence of an antibiotic resistance-modifying component. Further investigation is needed to identify the active components and assess their clinical relevance.  相似文献

目的:探讨不同的酸、碱处理条件下纯钛表面生物矿化沉积磷灰石层的差异。方法:对商用纯钛分别采用磨光处理、酸处理、酸碱处理或酸碱及热处理,然后放入模拟体液(SBF)中矿化处理7天;采用SEM观察试样表面的形貌,采用XRD分析试样表面沉积层的相组成。结果:经酸碱处理后纯钛形成微粗糙表面,随着碱液浓度的升高和采用热处理,试样表面的粗糙度增加且更均匀;经碱液处理的试样矿化后其表面出现磷灰石沉积层;而未处理组未发现磷灰石沉积层;XRD图谱分析发现矿化表面沉积物为HCA,钙磷比为1.37。结论:碱液处理有利于磷灰石层的形成,而改变碱液浓度和是否采用热处理对磷灰石沉积能力有影响。  相似文献

Cranial neural crest-derived ectomesenchymal cells represent a population of pluripotent stem cells giving rise to many of the various oro-facial and dental tissues. The factors determining the terminal fate of these cells are still unclear. The potentiality of human embryonic ectomesenchymal cells from the first branchial arch have been investigated when isolated and grown in a three-dimensional (3D)-collagen gel culture system in the presence of dentin matrix-derived non-collagenous proteins (DNCP) and TGFbeta-1. Functional differentiation of cells showing some characteristics of odontoblast-like cells could be observed when the cells were cultured with DNCP+TGFbeta-1 or DNCP, however, only cytological differentiation was observed during culture with TGFbeta-1 alone. The characteristics of these cells was assessed by morphological appearance, expression of the odontoblast phenotype marker dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), increased alkaline phosphatase levels and formation of mineralised nodules in vitro. The results indicate that these embryonic cells from the first branchial arch are capable of responding to the inductive stimulus of DNCP or DNCP+TGFbeta-1 when isolated and grown in the 3D collagen gel culture system. The capacity of the isolated cells to differentiate into mineralizing cells showing some characteristics of odontoblast-like cells under these growth conditions highlights the potential of such approaches for tissue engineering strategies for hard-tissue regeneration after injury.  相似文献

目的:研究经碱热法改性后的钛表面的物理化学性能与生物活性之间的关系、方法:用碱热法对钛表面进行活化,用SEM和XRD分析活化后的表面结构和成分,并在模拟体液中考察了其生物活性。结果:经过处理的钛表面形成了致密金红石型二氧化钛膜,富含Ti—OH基团的凝胶层以及具有高表面能的微观粗糙结构,该结构赋予材料以良好的生物活性结论:钛的生物活性是凝胶层,二氧化钛膜及其微观结构共同作用的结果。  相似文献

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, a common inhabitant of the human upper aerodigestive tract, produces a repeat in toxin (RTX), leukotoxin (LtxA). The LtxA is transcribed as a 114-kDa inactive protoxin with activation being achieved by attachment of short chain fatty acyl groups to internal lysine residues. Methyl esters of LtxA that were isolated from A. actinomycetemcomitans strains JP2 and HK1651 and subjected to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry contained palmitoyl (C16:0, 27-29%) and palmitolyl (C16:1 cis Δ9, 43-44%) fatty acyl groups with smaller quantities of myristic (C14:0, 14%) and stearic (C18:0, 12-14%) fatty acids. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry of tryptic peptides from acylated and unacylated recombinant LtxA confirmed that Lys(562) and Lys(687) are the sites of acyl group attachment. During analysis of recombinant LtxA peptides, we observed peptide spectra that were not observed as part of the RTX acylation schemes of either Escherichia coliα-hemolysin or Bordetella pertussis cyclolysin. Mass calculations of these spectra suggested that LtxA was also modified by the addition of monohydroxylated forms of C14 and C16 acyl groups. Multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry identified hydroxymyristic and hydroxypalmitic acids in wild-type LtxA methyl esters. Single or tandem replacement of Lys(562) and Lys(687) with Arg blocks acylation, resulting in a >75% decrease in cytotoxicity when compared with wild-type toxin, suggesting that these post-translational modifications are playing a critical role in LtxA-mediated target cell cytotoxicity.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the influence of periodontal status, clinical data, and serum markers on salivary leptin levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).MethodsA case–control study was conducted with 38 patients with SLE and 29 healthy controls. Periodontal data included periodontal probing depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and gingival bleeding on probing (BOP). Stimulated saliva samples were collected to analyze salivary leptin levels. Clinical and serum data were collected from the SLE group. Statistical analysis included the t-test, Mann–Whitney test, Spearman correlation coefficient, and a structural equation model.ResultsThe SLE group had a lower salivary leptin level than the control group (P = 0.002). The model revealed that SLE had an inverse and independent effect on salivary leptin (standardized estimate =  ? 0.289, P = 0.023). Moreover, salivary leptin level negatively correlated with the serum levels of triglyceride, creatinine, and leukocytes, positively correlated with the serum total cholesterol, but was not significantly correlated with the periodontal status.ConclusionThese findings suggest that patients with SLE have a lower salivary leptin level. In addition, the level of salivary leptin does not appear to be related to periodontal status in patients with SLE.  相似文献

Abstract – Objectives: The aim of the study was to test prospectively Wilson and Cleary’s ( 1 ) conceptual model of the direct and mediated pathways between symptom burden, functional status and health perceptions in relation to the oral health of housebound elderly edentulous people. Methods: The data were collected as part of a community based randomized control trial of a domiciliary denture service for older people. Measures of self‐reported symptoms, functional status and global oral and general health perceptions were collected from 133 participants prior to treatment and at 3‐month follow‐up. Results: The results indicated support for the dominant direct and indirect pathways within the model; worse patient reported symptoms predicted a lower functional status; worse daily functioning predicted lower global oral health perceptions. In addition, the impact of symptom status on oral health perceptions was mediated by patient reported functioning. The treatment (domiciliary denture service) significantly improved functional status and global oral health perceptions. All relationships were significant prospectively that is, from baseline, prior to the intervention, to 3‐month follow‐up, with the exception of between symptoms functioning. Conclusion: The results support Wilson and Cleary’s conceptual model of patient outcomes as applied to elderly edentulous people. They highlight the importance of assessing a range of patient‐orientated variables in order to help gain a greater understanding of how oral health impacts on individuals’ daily lives and well‐being. Further conceptual development of the model is discussed, particularly the role of individual difference factors.  相似文献

Purpose: Degradation products of metallic biomaterials including titanium may result in metal hypersensitivity reaction. Hypersensitivity to biomaterials is often described in terms of vague pain, skin rashes, fatigue and malaise and in some cases implant loss. Recently, titanium hypersensitivity has been suggested as one of the factors responsible for implant failure. Although titanium hypersensitivity is a growing concern, epidemiological data on incidence of titanium‐related allergic reactions are still lacking. Materials and methods: A computer search of electronic databases primarily MEDLINE and PUBMED was performed with the following key words: ‘titanium hypersensitivity’, ‘titanium allergy’, ‘titanium release’ without any language restriction. Manual searches of the bibliographies of all the retrieved articles were also performed. In addition, a complementary hand search was also conducted to identify recent articles and case reports. Results: Most of the literature comprised case reports and prospective in vivo/in vitro trials. One hundred and twenty‐seven publications were selected for full text reading. The bulk of the literature originated from the orthopaedic discipline, reporting wear debris following knee/hip arthroplasties. The rest comprised osteosynthesis (plates/screws), oral implant/dental materials, dermatology/cardiac‐pacemaker, pathology/cancer, biomaterials and general reports. Conclusion: This review of the literature indicates that titanium can induce hypersensitivity in susceptible patients and could play a critical role in implant failure. Furthermore, this review supports the need for long‐term clinical and radiographic follow‐up of all implant patients who are sensitive to metals. At present, we know little about titanium hypersensitivity, but it cannot be excluded as a reason for implant failure. To cite this article:
